Harriet Elizabeth Bastock was baptised on 14th October 1840 at the parish church of St Mary in Warwick. She was the daughter of a laundress named Harriet Matilda Caroline Bastock, formerly Reynolds, and John Bastock, a mason and bricklayer. The family lived on Saltisford, the main road out of Warwick to the north-west. The 1841 census finds Harriet living on Saltisford with her parents.
In 1847, Harriet's father died, aged just 36. Three years later Harriet's mother remarried, with a bricklayer named John Prestidge becoming Harriet's stepfather. The 1851 census finds Harriet living with her mother, stepfather, three younger siblings and a baby half-sister. Some time between 1851 and 1861 the family left Warwick and moved ten miles north to Coventry, where the 1861 census finds the family living at Harnall Lane. By this time Harriet was working as a servant. She has yet to be researched after 1861.
