Bill of Sale

In 1775, Hannah McMurtry. widow of James McMurtry made the following Bill of Sale to her son Samuel, "youngest son" of her deceased husband:

"... for the love and affection that I Hannah McMurtry of Bedford County have for my son Samuel McMurtry son of James McMurtry, late of Bedford County deceased to bequeath to my son Samuel one negro girl named Murren the said negro I purchased of Matthew Tanner of Mecklenberg County -- but if in case the said Negro should have a child or children before the said my son Samuel comes of Lawful age then the said child or children that shall be born before he the said Samuel arrives to the age of 21 years I give & bequeath and to be equally divided betwixt these my other children to wit, James, Elizabeth, Allice, Mary and Ann McMurtrey to them and to their heirs forever."

Hannah McMurtry presented the Bill of Sale on May 27, 1776, but it was not recorded at that time. The same was acknowledged by her on November 23, 1778.
