Regard wife of Hance Lycan: Hance Lycan and wife Rachel signed a deed Sept 1769.There is no mention of any other wife, but the possibility exists Rachel might not be the Mother of Susannah. Hance Lycan (Likin, Likan etc ) witnessed a Rowan Co. NC Deed April, 1755. He was on Rowan Co. Tax Lists following this. Hance Lycan appeared on Wilkes Co. NC Tax Lists 1782,through 1796. He signed a March 1791 deed which contained critical information. "Hance Lycan, blacksmith, "for the love I bear my loving daughter Susannah Matthews, wife of William Matthews" This deeded her 320 acres known as "The Old Shop Field." This is important for it postively identifies Susannah as his daughter, that Ambros Wray was dead by this time and she had married William Matthews. A word about the name Matthews, it was used interchangeably with Mathis. This found in Thomas Mathis signing Nancy's marriage bond Thom Mathis, Thomas Matthews was appointed Executor of William Matthews will and I think there is no doubt it is the same man. Similar examples can be found in other Matthews-Mathis people of Wilkes County The same is true of the Wray-Ray name. Usually but not always it was Ambrose Wray, His son Joseph Ray. I think it will be fairly easy to trace Hance Lycan's b abt 1727 ancestral line back to brothers Peter Nilson Lycon and Michael Lycon. They were in America near Philadelphia, Pa. by 1675. At least three Hans Lycons are identified. The Lycon family came from Lyckan, Gunnarskog Parish. Varmland, Sweden. Source (Craig who gives several sources in WFT. As regards to Hance Lycan: It is important to note that a brother Jacob Lycan accompanied him to North Carolina. Further Hance Lycan had a son Jacob Gooding Lycan who appears in many documents for this time period.
