Birth information was verified by the 1900 Census Richland County. Gilbert served in WW1, honorably discharged. He enjoyed playing the fiddle at house parties. He loved to dance, especially polka. He and his sister Gertrude won a polka dance contest. He worked as a farm labor until 1940. Then moved to Hankinson and worked as a janitor at St.Phillips Catholic Church. He also was in charge of keeping the Church cemetery prim and proper. After that, he began working for the Soo Line Railroad in the coal shute, shoveling coal into trains. Then as a section laborer until retirement in 1960. He died two years later, July 14, 1962. He was found by his wife, Adeline. She called him to come in to eat and he didn't answer her. He was behind the garage cutting wood and that is where he died of a massive heart attack. References
