George Wassell was born in 1857 at Birmingham, son of a burnisher named Rose Wassell, formerly Adderly, and her husband Henry Wassell, a button maker. George appears in the 1861 census living with his parents and siblings in Birmingham. In the mid 1860s, George's father died. His mother remarried in 1870 to a gun rib forger named Henry Payne. The 1871 census finds George living with his mother, stepfather and siblings. At this time, aged 14, George was working in the steel toy trade.

By 1881 George had left home and was a soldier, based at Budbrooke Barracks just outside Warwick. Whilst still serving as a soldier, George married Emma Mitchell on 17th September 1882, when he was 25 years old. She was 18 years old and from Warwick. They had a daughter, Rose Ann, born in 1883, but sadly she died the following year. George then appears to have left the army. He returned with Emma to Birmingham, where George found work as a porter. They went on to have a son named Henry in 1885, a daughter named Florence Beatrice in 1887 and a son named George Thomas in about 1889. Sadly, Emma died either giving birth to George Thomas or shortly afterwards. She was only 24 when she died; they had been married less than seven years. Baby George was brought up by Emma's sister Fanny and their mother in Warwick and later Coventry.

George stayed in Birmingham with his elder two surviving children. Some time between 1901 and 1911 young George rejoined the family in Birmingham. The 1911 census finds George with all three of his surviving children living in a four roomed house. His daughter Florence's husband and their two daughters (George's first grandchildren) were also in the house.

George died in 1935, aged 77. He had outlived his wife Emma by over 46 years.
