- Will of George Sommers – May 17, 1785
- In the name of God Amen
- I, George Summers, of Oxford in the County of Sussex and State of New Jersey being weak in body but of perfect and sound memory and understanding, the infirmity of age only—excepted, Blessed be God for His mercies. On this seventeenth day of May in the year of our Lord One Thousand seven Hundred and Eighty Five and the Eighth year of American Sovereign Independence, publish, make and ordain this and none else to be my last will and testament hereby revoking and making void all former and other wills heretofore by me made, ratifying and confirming this to be my last will and testament.
- Imprimis. I commend my immortal soul to the infinite mercies of Almighty in hopes of a glorious resurrection through the merits of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ and my Body to be buried in a decent and Christian like manner without pomp or vanity at the direction? Of my executors herein after nominated and appointed and my Express will is that all my just debts and funeral charges be fully paid out of my personal estate by my ??? and as touching such worldly estate as it hath pleased God to bless me with.
- I will and devise and dispose of in the following manner to wit.
- I will and bequeath unto my eldest son GEORGE Summers the sum of seven pounds fifteen shillings current money of the state of New Jersey in gold or silver money as the same ??now?? at this time ????? the current?? The state of New Jersey in full of his birthright as being my first begotten son to be paid to him by my executors in twelve months next after my decease if demanded.
- Also I will unto my son JOHN Sommers and to his heirs by his ???? wife ANN. All the farm and plantations in Oxford with the building ????? and appendages thereunto belonging, containing about four hundred and fourteen acres, more or less ???ing the full use and benefit of the above lands unto my dearly beloved wife during her widowhood for her support and decent maintenance and my desire is that she may live with my son JOHN. Nevertheless, my said wife BARBARA may remove elsewhere at her free choice.
- And also I will unto my beloved wife BARBARA all my personal estate of very? ?Determamation? Whatsoever during the time she remains my widow and at her death the ??lands to cede to my said son JOHN, his heirs and assigns to all intent and purposes. And also I will unto my beloved wife during her widowhood the entire benefit and profits of the plantation now tenanted by Peter SNYDER containing 120 ¾ acres of land and at her decrees?
- The said one hundred and twenty acres and ¾ to be equally divided between my three daughters to them and their heirs and assigns. Namely, to MARY the wife of Ernst MENGE, CATHARINE the wife of Andrew BANGHEART & EVA the wife of Richard KNOWLS to be divided into three equal shares having due cesard? To quantity and quality, by my executers whom I do authorize and I empower or securer?? Of them and their executors after them to make partition? & convey the said lands to them respectively and to their heirs ????and also ???? unto my daughter CATHARINE the wife of Thomas HAYS the sum of seven pounds, fifteen schillings current money of New Jersey in gold or silver money as the same now at this time passes? Current in the state of New Jersey; and also, I will unto my daughter BARBARA, the wife of Peter FITE the sum of fifteen pounds like money as above said to be paid to them respectively at six months after the decease of my wife BARBARA; to be paid by my son John SOMMERS and I do hereby nominate and appoint my wife Barbara executor and my son John SOMMERS executor of this my last will and testament hereby vesting them or the surviving? With full and ample power to convey the lands and their executors after them according to the ?? intent and purposes herein contained.
- In witness whereof the testator George SOMMERS hath here unto set my hand and seal in the presence of us who have at his request subjected our names witnesses thereto.
