Enlisted in the Royal Regiment of Artillery circa 1825. He volunteered for the British Legion in 1835 as a Lieutenant and fought in the First Carlist War in Spain. By 1837, he was a Brevet-Major and awarded the title "Dom of San Fernando" by the Spanish Government. He is mentioned in Somerville's book "History of the British Legion and War in Spain". The legion was commanded by Sir George Lacy Evans. The naval contingent was commanded, for a time, by Lord John Hay who wrote a book called " A Forlorn Hope" that described his experiences. According to Nellie McLain, this book makes reference to George Eagar. Locating a copy may be of great help in further research.
