This is a story Henry Lee McCutcheon wrote about his grandparents they told him when he was 9 or 10 years old:

In 1850, George Washington McCutcheon, Jr. was born in Augusta County. His Father, George Washington McCutcheon, Sr. had moved from the McKennly area and settled near Pond Gap, VA, met and married a local girl with the maiden name of Harlow. George, Jr. was their only child. George, Sr. was wounded while in the Calvary in the Civil War in the early part, at the battle of Manassas. He owned his horse and, after being gut shot, he rode it back home. The horse gave out six miles from home, so he shot the horse and walked the rest of the way home. He died from the wound three days later at his home near Pond Gap, Va.

In 1849, Emma Jane Kurtz was born at Rockbridge Baths, Rockbridge County on a farm near the Maury River which is near Lexington, VA on Route 39. You could travel from her home to Goshen through Goshen Pass. Emma went to visit her sister’s home on Route 42, across the road from the Lebanon Presbyterian Church, in Rockbridge County, VA. After Sunday service at the church, there was a get together at her sister’s home. This is where she met her future husband, George Washington McCutcheon, Jr. They carried out their courtship for some two years on weekends, as often as the weather would permit, being six and twenty miles apart at times. George was then able to buy twenty acres of land in Augusta Springs, VA and built a four room log cabin on the place, they married and settled in for life. He later built a six room house with sawed lumber, a more comfortable place in the lower part near the creek acreage. It was a nice place to call home and here they raised 4 boys and 2 girls. They both died at the age of 77 years old.
