    Of moderate sized figure, height 5 feet 8 inches, 153 pounds, broad and deep chest, long and well moulded head, face cut in regular, positive lines, with brown eyes and heavy brows, gray, crisp hair and mustache; the entire countenance rendered virile by strong set jaws; appearance and bearing marked by decision and energy, without vehemence; temperament equable and not easily disturbed; speech clear, measured and exact. His early education he received at the East Liberty, (Pa.) Academy, and was afterwards graduated from the P. Duff Mercantile College, Pittsburgh, Pa. Upon leaving school entered a wholesale and retail hardware store in the same city, and in due time learned the business and followed it for several years, after which he engaged in various enterprises, with more or less success. Finally he drifted into the field of invention and was granted a number of patents in this and foreign countries. His last important invention, consisting of a power broom sewing machine, was one of great merit and proved to be a financial success, the leading broom manufacturers of this entire country, Canada and Australia adopting it.

    Married to ANNIE QUAIL, in Washington Pa., Oct. 30, 1856. Born in Washington, Pa., March 29, 1836.

    Moderate weight and size, dark brown hair, light blue eyes, regular cut features, expression bright and animated, temperament sanguine, always inclined to the hopeful side of life, a happy and cheerful disposition and a general favorite. Graduated from the Washington (Pa.) Female Seminary.
