    232. George Howe364, born May 1724 in Richmond Co., Virginia365; died December 01, 1794 in Richmond Co., Virginia366. He was the son of 464. John How III and 465. Mary Unknown. He married 233. Mary Landman 1748 in Richmond County, VA (prob.)367.

    233. Mary Landman368, born March 14, 1722/23 in North Farnham Parish, Richmond Co., VA369. She was the daughter of 466. William Landman and 467. Elizabeth Pugh

The following information about George How is excerpted from a family genealogy prepared for the descendants of Harvey M. Howe by Patricia McLish Brutsche:

"George How was born on the family plantation May 1724 in Richmond County, Virginia. In his will, dated April 23, 1794, he left the estate intact to his wife, only to be divided amongst his children on her death. George died in December of 1794, aged 70.

In 1748 he married Mary Landman, daughter of William and Elizabeth (Pugh) Landman. Her great grandfather, also William, settled on the western banks of the Rapahannock (later Essex County) where he bought land in 1666. The next two generations accumulated lands on both sides of the river and possessed three large plantations. Mary's grandparents were Lewis (b. ca 1682), Wales, d. 1734/5 there and Ann (b. ca 1686, d. 1740 Virginia) Pugh. They were married in 1704 and had 7 children. In 1734, Lewis Pugh and son went to South Wales to claim property inherited from his father David and while there [he] died. When his wife Ann died in 1740, all this information was entered into court records to determine heirs. It was stated that Elizabeth Pugh, second child, was born Mar. 19, 1708, and was the wife of William Landman.

George How's tobacco plantation which had flourished for over two generations did not fare well with the advent of the Revolution, since the principal market was England. He had given property to his eldest son John on his marriage in 1772 and we do not know how John did, but George found, in attempting to convert to grain, that years of growing tobacco rendered the soil unfit for other crops. By the time Mary died (Nov/Dec. 1798) the plantation was not the profitable enterprise that it had been. Her second son, George, died a few months after she did and Thomas, William, and James left. Since John had died a few years before, that left only Abner who had married 1790. By 1800 he was the only How of this family left in Richmond County."
