George was a farmer with family on the 1860 and 1870 census records. George could read but not write. But he did have 13 children.

Interestingly, on the 1860 census it says George does not know where he was born. On the 1870 it is listed as Virginia. The 1910 census for his daughter Cora states her parents were born in Ohio. Her brother's 1910 census states West Virginia. His daughter Florence's birth register shows George providing the information and states he is from Jackson County, VA.

By the 1880 census, George and Clarissa still had 6 kids at home. (Two sons were married and lived nearby.) The youngest was George Jr., an infant. Supposedly there were two more children later: Narcissa and Sara. However, they are not listed on any census nor known in the family oral history so those children may or may not be correct or died young. Linda is not listed on the 1880 census, possibly dead.

In 1897 Clarissa passed away. George began living with his daughter Cora and her family. By the 1910 census, George was living with his other daughter Lora Alice "Ella" and her husband Thomas Ash. George is living off of his "own income" and is listed as a farmer. His son-in-law is a retail merchant. They are living in Clay, Wirt County, WV.

Also notable on the 1910 census is that his parents were born in "United States." In other words, George may not have known his parents birth states.

Note - It was once believed he was born in Kentucky but no evidence so far includes Kentucky.

Two civil war records match George. Standing Stone is the best guess as it is in Wirt County.
