Facts and Events
George Duckworth was involved in the Luddite movement[1] in West Yorkshire. In March 1812, the workers in Halifax read about the daring proceedings of the Nottingham "frame breakers" and formed a committee. Members took an oath to submit to the commands of General Ludd and not to reveal the plans or the names of persons in the secret committee. George Duckworth was implicated as being on a committee which urged an under-cover policeman to take the oath and he and five others were tried for the offense of "Administering unlawful Oaths. One juvenile was acquitted and the others including George were found guilty and transported for seven years. References
