At the age of 17, he worked as a miner in Dalton. He came to the U.S. on May 5, 1884 aboard the SS Alaska from Liverpool to New York. The SS Alaska passenger list is on NARA M237, roll 475, list 497, as found on Ancestry.com. He entered Wheaton College and became a minister. He was a minister in Whiting, Larchwood, and Green Mountain. He also farmed.

The 1930 census, for Ashton Twp in Monona County, shows two teachers living with George and Kittie. One teacher taught 6th grade and the other taught in high school. [Marti Babb]
