The Anderson Family of Savannah, Ga.
Capt. George Anderson, of the city of New York, was, as far as is known, the first member of this family in America. He is supposed to have come to this country prior to the year 1760, and, according to the tradition in the family, is said to have come from the neighborhood of Berwick on the Tweed, in Northumberland County, England. The plantation owned by his son, near Savannah, and still in the possession of some of the family, received the name of "Berwick," it is said, from that circumstance. Capt. George Anderson was married on February 16th, 1761, by the Rev. Henry Barclay, Rector of Trinity Church in New York City, to Deborah Grant, also of New York City (b. 1736). Their marriage certificate is now in the possession of J. Randolph Anderson, Esq., of Savannah. ... His will is of record in the office of the Secretary of State of the State of Georgia, in Book of Wills "B", pages 194-196. His widow, Mrs. Deborah Anderson, continued to reside in Savannah, and died there at the age of 76, on May 5th 1812.
