"FREDERICK FREEMAN WARDWELL and practically all of his brothers went to sea. He, himself, went to the Grand Banks fishing for 29 years, usually from April to October, and during the winter months he went on foreign voyages in the old square-rigged ships. He was Captain of several vessels and while on one of these trips, he was taken sick with the measles and was put ashore at Vineyard Haven, Mass., in the Marine Hospital. Being disgusted with the medical attention given there, he ran away from the hospital while still very sick with the measles and came home, where he was very sick in bed for many months. When he finally got up, he contracted tuberculosis from which he never recovered. He was sick for about sixteen years before he died at the age of 64."
