HISTORICAL SKETCHES" fiche #6101095, (fiche #2) "Frederick Crist", p 166 "Frederick Crist was born in Perry Co. in 1800. He and his wife, Mary A. Lones, purchased a farm in southern Licking Township, Mar 15, 1835. They were the parents of eight children, three of whom died in infancy. The five named: Elizabeth, Levi, Rebecca, Solomon, and John, all married partners in a radius of five miles of their home.Frederick Crist' sisters, Christina, Sarah, and Elizabeth and brothers, Jacob, John, William and Phillip were the children of W.Phillip Conrad Crist and Ann Butts Crist. W. Phillip Crist immigrated to Philadelphia from Dusseldorf, Germany, about 1767 or earlier, and he served in General George Washington's Continental Army, from the beginning to Cornwallis' surrender at Yorktown, Virginia, in October 1781. For his service, he was partly paid in Government Script (red dog money). Becoming discouraged, at not being able to turn the script in for anything of value, he burned it! Years later, when the Federal Government got going, the paper script was redeemed. A sail-ship bound for America was boarded by W.Phillip C.Crist when he was about fourteen years of age. In those days a voyage required sixty days or more, a long time to get hungry. He was discovered on shipboard and to pay for his transportation the ship captain sold him into bondage to a weaver. He had learned weaving from his father, who was also a weaver. When Great Britain threatened the Colonies the employer told W.P.Crist that if he would join General Washington's Army he would give him his freedom, and he did. References
