Freddie was once kidnapped out of McLuen's yard on Park Street in Perry by "gypsies." They wanted to use him to beg as it was thought that people would give him money as they felt sorry for him. His father Billy McLuen went after him with a horse and buggy and not only rescued Freddie but chased the gypsies way out of town.
