This appears to be Francis of Virginia, a different person from Francis of RI and Long Island On June i7th, 1623, a certain Francis Weekes made a proposition on behalf of merchants of Barnstaple, Devon, for settling plantations in New England, and on June 23rd, 1623, an answer was sent to the merchants of Barn- staple, accepting this proposition, and promise taken under the name of Francis Weekes, for two hundred pounds.*2* Nothing definite is known to connect this Francis Weekes with the Francis Weekes who came from Salem to Providence, Rhode Island, with Roger Williams, in i636,(8> and who is described by him as "a poor young fellow," and who is "supposed to have been a minor, as his name does not appear in the original deed from Williams,"(4> and it is only the similarity of names that has led to the supposition that they may have been related. It would seem to prove however, that Francis Weekes came from Devonshire, for there are still many Weekes there, and in the neighboring county of Cornwall, whence Roger Williams sailed to America. |
