The Master was Wm Carr and the surgeon was Ptr J. Suther. Mangels was a Class AE1 595 ton ship with 6 guns and was built at Calcutta in 1802. The ship's arrival was not reported in the newspapers. Records for Francis indicate that he was single and was transported for sheep stealing. The prosecutor was Walter Flowers. Evidently he had convictions: once for poaching - 3 months, again 3 months, again 2 months for poaching. His gaol report was bad but his hulk report was orderly. Francis was given his Ticket of Leave on 25 August 1843, Conditional Pardon on 27 May 1845 and was pardoned on 22 May 184(?). (CON 31/33) His age was given as 24, height 5' 6 1/4". He was a ploughman who could reap, mow and thrash. He was a native of Downton where he had two brothers, Charles and James. He was a Protestant and could read. (CON 14/4)

Francis was described as having a brown complexion and medium-large head and chin. His hair and eyebrows were dark brown and his eyes were grey. He had an oval visage with a high forehead, long nose and wide chin. (CON 18/16)

After being given his ticket of leave, Francis was appropriated to Lieut. Langdon at Clyde. (CSO1/814/17401, p 87)
