• per the obituary of niece Mary Catherine Bowlin(g) (Mrs. Koskiusko Whelan), Evelyn was blind and entrusted with the care and education of Catherine following the death of Catherine's parents in Winchester, Frederick County, Virginia. Evelyn removed to Cambridge City, Indiana sometime before 1850 with Catherine and the family of her sister Mary Jane (Fenton) Richards.
