Ethel worked as a secretary for a heating and cooling company, and an assistant in a doctor's office. She also worked as a saleswoman for the Haley Co. While her daughter and husband (Dorothy and Ed Reisland) and their children (Cindy and Sally) were living with her (from 1947 - 1959) she lived "upstairs" at 17305 E. Lakewood Hts. Blvd. Later in life she sold that house, and moved for a short while to Arizona with Dot and Ed, but soon decided to move back to Ohio and get an apartment. She died of a heart attack in 1964. Ethel is buried at Glendale Cemetery, 150 Glendale Ave., Akron, OH 44302. Cemetery records list cause of death as "coronary thrombosis".

Granddaughter Donna remembers that everytime her family would come and visit Ethel from PA she always had to send something home with the kids. She would often send a little brown bag of things for Janice, Dave, and Donna. On one visit, as the kids were anticipating what would be sent home with them, Gramma Ethel wasn't prepared and couldn't think of anything to send with them. Janice said, "Well, what about an egg." No one can remember if an egg actually made the trip back to PA.

Gramma Ethel taught Donna how to knit, and Donna taught her mother, Irene Paulsen.

Jan remembers sitting in the bedroom at the top of the stairs on Lakewood Hts. Blvd. and looking at pictures with grandma Ethel of Victor Paulsen.

Ethel and the boys moved back to Akron for a while. This was probably before Dorothy was born. Dorothy said that they moved in with Ethel's mother after her father died to keep Gramma Carl company. She thought that they stayed about 1 year.

Jan remembers Ethel rented the upstairs alcove bedroom and the upstairs living room area out during the war. Dorothy stayed upstairs at the bedroom at the top of the stairs during that time. This could have been to bring a little extra money, but probably was to help out people due to a shortage of housing during the war.

Her middle name has been documented as being spelled Meriam and Miriam.
