Ernest and his parents moved back to Goldenville, Guysborough CO Nova Sco tia, where he grew up until he returned to the states to join the Americ an Navy on 14th May 1917. He enlisted on board the U.S.S Virginia at Bost on, MA as a Fireman Third Class. On the 18th of May, he was transferr ed to the U.S.S NY. He was promoted to Fireman Second Class on 17th Sept ., 1917 and Fireman First Class on 1st April 1918 while on the U.S.S NY se rved with the British grand fleet in European War Zone during the war wi th central powers from 1st Dec. 1917 until 15 Dec. 1918. When he left t he Navy, he was supposed to have come back to N.S and then he and a frie nd were supposed to have gone out to Western Canada for a few years, th en Ernest went to Toronto, Ontario where he worked as a chef in the Old Fo rd Hotel where he met Frances Teresa Connoly from Liverpool, Eng who w orked as a waitress.

They were married Oct. 3, 1931 in St. Johns Church, Norway, Toronto, Ontar io.

After their marriage, Frances stayed in Toronto to work and bring up t he children that followed, while Ernest went to work in the gold min es at Sue Lookout in Timmins, Ontario, travelling back and forth to Toront o. Later, he changed jobs back to being a chef in the lumber camps in Nort hern Ontario. This was approximately 1934. Frances was able to talk h im into finally taking a job in Toronto at the Canada Wire and Cab le CO In 1948, Ernest took his first heart attack, and had to change jo bs again to operating an elevator at the Aitkin Head CO this lasted unt il Oct. 2, 1951 when Ernest died of a fatal heart attack at the age of 5 5. Ernest was also a Freemason.
