Acquisition of Land from Chalkley's:
- Page 456.--29th September, 1747. £30. James Wood, of Frederick, to Ephraim (Vance), of Augusta, 245 acres on Goose Creek patented to James Wood, 12th January, 1746, adjoining Francis Betty. Teste: James Patton, Jno. Buchanan, Charles Campbell. Proved, 19th November, 1747, by James Patton and Chas. Camell. (Note: Ephraim's surname was left off the Chalkley's record, but it is identified easily with the disposition to James Nealey in 1749, listed below).
- Page 235.--19th April, 1755. Robert Box to Ephraim Vause, 5 sh., 179 acres by patent 22d August, 1753, on a branch on the north side the Little River. Teste: Hugh Means. Proved, 1755 by James Neelly and James Campbell, and 20th November, 1771 by Hugh Means.

Col. Ephraim Vause of Ft. Vause
For the protection of his family and his neighbors, Col. Ephraim Vause built a simple fort nearby on his farm. In June 1756, during the French and Indian War, Indians attacked and burned down his fort, killing several settlers and taking many prisoner. An account of this can be found in the following article:
