Emanuel Creager, son of Christian Creager and Anna Mary Woolf, was born 01 July 1811 in Frederick County, Maryland. He was baptized at the Evangelical Lutheran Church in Woodsboro, Maryland. Jacob Bike was his sponsor, (Mrs. Lawson states that date was not given in the record.) When Emanuel was a small baby his parents and their young family removed to Montgomery County, Ohio, Settling about 6 Miles from Dayton. Emanuel and his siblings grew up in what was known as the "Creager Neighborhood". The family attended David's Church. More than likely, members of the family helped to build the two story log church. Among the names in David's Reformed Church's Minute Book #1, dated 15 September 1826 to 27 September 1874, is found this entry: "Emanuel Creager donated $1.00"(Lawson, Irene Creager, "The Creager History." p.48)

In 1821, Christian and Anna Mary (Woolf/Wolf) Creager sold 52 acres of land to Jacob and Sarah Swadener, and thus Emanuel was to meet his future wife. Mary Jane Swadener, eldest child and dau/o Henry Swadener and Elenor Suman, and Emanuel Creager were married 31 August 1837. Emanuel and Mary Jane set up housekeeping and farming with some items purchased from the public auction of his father's (Christian's) estate, as Christian Creager had died a year previously.

In 1840, the couple and children were living in Washington Township, Montgomery County, Ohio with two Children. Emanuel and Mary Jane became members of David's Reformed Church on 19 May 1844.

Emanuel and Mary Jane removed to Adams Township in Darke County, Ohio after Having purchased 81 acres of land there. Here, they lived as the time of the 1850 Federal Census.
