Obituary: Elmer L. Douglas Aberdeen American News, Mar. 13, 1984, pg. 13 Elmer Douglas - formerly Aberdeen Elmer L. Douglas, 68, longtime South Dakota educator, died Friday, March 9, at the University of Minnesota Hospitals, Minneapolis. Memorial services were Monday at Ascension Lutheran Church, Brookings, (SD), with burial in the First Lutheran Cemetery,Brookings. The Eidsness Funeral Home, Brookings, was in charge of arrangements. Mr. Douglas was born Nov. 15, 1915, at Noblesville, Ind. He grew up in Aberdeen and graduated from Eastern Kentucky State University in 1938. He earned his master's degree at the University of South Dakota and taught at Columbia and Hecla. He served in the U.S. Navy during World War II and returned to Hecla toteach. He married Florence M. Mitchell Aug. 9, 1947, at Hecla. He was superintendent of schools at Bath two years and at Lennox from 1950 to 1961. He lived in Illinois one year before moving to Brookings where he had since redided. He was employed by the American Book Company from 1961 to 1973 and then served as superintendent of schools at Rutland until retiring in 1979. He was past president of the South Dakota School Administrators Association. Survivors include his widow; one son, Bill, Aberdeen; one daughter, Mrs. Ron (Jane) Schultz, Valley Springs; one brother, Henry, Spearfish; two sisters, Mrs. Russell (Lenore) Barstow, Sioux Falls; and Mrs. Jim (Ruth) Rasmussen, Sacramento, Calif., and three grandchildren. |
