Ellen Ralston was born on 6th October 1849 in Birkenhead, the third of six children of a Scottish stone mason named William Ralston and his Irish wife, Ellen Coghlan.

When Ellen was five years old her father died in New York. Less than four years later, when Ellen was eight years old, her mother Ellen died too, leaving Ellen and her five siblings orphans. Their elderly maternal grandmother looked after them for some of the time, but sometimes some of the children, including Ellen, were placed in the care of the Liverpool Orphan Asylum.

In 1869, when Ellen was nineteen, her grandmother died too. The 1871 census finds Ellen working as a domestic servant, being an under-nurse for a merchant's family in the Garston area of Liverpool.

In 1874, aged 24, Ellen married a provision dealer and cow keeper named John Buckley. They married in the parish of Bebington, Cheshire, which was where he had been born and raised in the hamlet of New Ferry. Initially, John and Ellen moved away to Chadderton in Lancashire, where their first two children were born, but by 1880 had returned to New Ferry, where they were to live the rest of their lives. Overall, John and Ellen had eight children, although one died as a baby.

In 1902, John Buckley died, aged 55. Ellen was about 53 when her husband died. She outlived him by over 25 years, all of which she spent living at 12 New Ferry Road, New Ferry, being where she and John had been living in 1901. Ellen died on 25th March 1928, leaving an estate worth over £4,300 - a very substantial estate for the time.
