Facts and Events
Coddington and Jacobus gave her name as "Elizabeth Eacre", based upon a printed marriage entry in W. P. W. Phillimore's "Hertfordshire Marriages," and interpreted her surname as a variant of Aker or Acre. But no Aker or Eacre appear in the 1545 lay subsidy of Hertfordshire at Ardeley or elsewhere nearby. Much later, S. Allyn Peck examined a photocopy of the original parish register of Ardeley, where the marriage entry was clearly written as "Thomas Myles" and "Elizabeth Eaire," a variant of Eyre. William Eyre is in the 1545 subsidy, and his will of 1559 mentions a daughter Elizabeth. Change Date: 31 MAY 2004 at 21:40:20 |
