Betty Ann, as she was known, was a 1937 graduate of Story City High School and was awarded the St. Olaf Scholarship. At Saint Olaf College she sang for four years in the St. Olaf choir, under Dr. F. Melius Christiansen. In her senior year, she was chosen Homecoming Queen. In 1941 she graduated from St. Olaf College with major in Public School Music. She taught elementary and high school music in Randall, Iowa. She pursued further studies at Stanford University, University of California at Davis, California State University at Sacramento, and at the Orff Institute in Salzburg, Austria. Betty Ann taught classroom teachers, was director of a multi-choir program in churches served by her husband, and was recognized as a children's choir specialist, as clinician and festival director throughout the U. S. and Canada. She composed numerous anthems for children's and youth choirs, and was one of the authors of the Augsburg 'Alleulia Series' curriculum.
