Facts and Events
REFN: I Said to be Cherokee Indian Living near McClellan, Doddridge Co, (W)VAin 1880*Elizabeth wasn't Cherokee, but she did have Cherokee blood. Elizabeth's grandfather was Leonard Carroll/Carrel (His name comes up both ways in the War of 1812 pension records). He married a woman named Barbara before 1797. The only place her name is found is in the marriage record of their son, Samuel. SOURCE: Brenda Kendig Leonard was born in South Carolina and lived in Pendelton District along the Cherokee Nation border at the time. It has been noted by another researcher that Barbara means "strange or foreign" which seems to lend to the idea that she was the full blooded Cherokee. I was also told that another female resercher of the Carroll/Carrel line who could follow back through the women did a Mitochondrial DNA test and it did come back that she was part native american. Since she could trace all the other women back to European ancestors that left Barbara as the source of the DNA.
