Elijah Smith was baptised on 29th December 1816 at Geddington in Northamptonshire, son of Trinity Smith and her husband Cain, a basket maker and fiddler. The family were frequently described as being Gypsies in contemporary records, and appear to have travelled around Northamptonshire and the adjoining counties.

Sadly Elijah appears to have died as a young man when he was only nineteen years old, being buried at Denford in Northamptonshire on 26th February 1836.
