Notes

The following letter was written by Electra Edwards Nolte (b. 5/9/1893, d. 3/29/1988) to Leah Bernice (Hall) Esteb (b. 7/17/1909, d. 1/26/1992). Electra and Leah are second cousins. October 17, 1978 Dear Leah, We could say we are cousins since your mother was first cousin to my Father and Mother. Aunt Julia was sister to Grandpa Edwards and Uncle LeGrand was brother to Grandpa Thomas Stone. I just got your letter this morn and if I don’t answer will forget. Yes I got your letter you sent back but we were having a lot of illness and I never got it answered. Uncle LeGrand Stone’s brother Freal Stone was never married. He lived alone till he was ailing and he came to Uncle Bruce Williams and Aunt Maretha’s and they cared for him till he died. Bruce and Maretha Williams was my Father Richard Edward’s sister and brother-in-law. They had 5 boys. Roby’s wife was a Burcham, Cora. Roby had saw mill; he had a large family. Uncle LeGrand a brother Robert Stone, he married Elvira, that was Maud Hall’s Mother. I hope I remembered it right. Pernay and Elsie are both passed on. They were to visit us about 22 years ago. Donald and Ethel was with them. Ethel died and Donald remarried an orphan girl. She has wrote me a time or two. They were poorly the last I heard from her. Uncle LeGrand had a sister that married Will Cooley. Lusian and Tessie come to see us when we were at Roby’s and I have their picture some place. I have here in closet to [can’t decipher: …sinkCuser] near full but don’t feel like lifting and looking at them. If Maud Hall is living she might tell something. Bert would be your uncle. They run a store in Galax VA. I don’t know if they had any children. If so they would be your first cousins. They build a new brick house since we were there. Harvey Burcham built a new brick home on Grandma Stone’s old place. We could see the place from LeGrand’s place on the steep hill, but Grandma Stone’s old house still stood. We could see from Legrand’s [the] Burcham’s place. Evelyn is our daughter, Evelyn Robertson. 600 Tarr St. Centralia. She took Nurse training so does a lot of nursing. She looks after us here and if they need to do extra care she tells them Julius is a bed patient most of the time. But they get him in a wheel chair out to dinner. At times his kidneys and bowels give him a lot of trouble, changing him and the bed. Olivia Jacobs says she was Edwards and her people lived in Virginia and were members of the Church of Christ. She is a member herself but she is looking at our record and has to talk to some of her people to see what they think. Anyway I guess she has a long ways to go to find relations. Thelma and Husband Sloan are of the Church in Cameron. We were happy to have them come to our gathering. Wish we could see you all. I was to see Florence and John when you was a little baby. The only one of you children till Thelma was here. Will close and when I can look at pictures. Will send you some. Evelyn is planning on sending Jessica, her daughter, to Earl Edward’s bible school when Jessica is finished her school. Well maybe some of you can get together and come. Ruby still has her house, be glad to have company. Our Love, Julius and Electra Write again. I haven’t been much help in relations in Va. Tell Ed and Dorothy hi and wish we could see them. Julius brother lives in St. Louis and is being cared for as he is 94 years old the 10th of November. See Julius is 90 December 28 and we are married 57 years December 18. I may have told you but don’t remember. The sun is bright but the wind is cool. Real nice fall weather. Most time to eat we will go to the dining room. Ruby gets some things wrong, for we have not sold our home as of yet. Seems like money is getting tight. Not many loans as was and the chance factory is talking of going on strike, so that is going to make it hard here. Too many strikes. A. B. Chance factory has kept Centralia alive. Our daughter Evelyn is here working Wednesday. Says her daughter, Jessica, is home today sick with Mumps and tomorrow is her 17th birthday, so don’t feel very happy. Love Electra
