Parentage

As cited, the Raymond Genealogy, p. 127, identifies Edward's father as Paul Raymond, and Paul did have a son Edward baptized in Salem 17 Dec 1727, which would match an age at death of 70 (need to shift baptism by 11 days to 28 Dec 1727 to reflect calendar shift in 1753).

However, as discussed on the Find A Grave memorial page, cited below, Paul Raymond's will in 1753 does not name a son Edward (Middlesex Probate 18427) which suggests Paul's son died before this date, and could not be the Edward who married Abigail Patch. This lack of mention in the will is presumably why the Balch Genealogy, p. 34, says Paul's son died young, also referenced on the Find A Grave memorial page.

An interesting deed in Middlesex Deeds, Vol. 52, p. 623, dated 12 May 1752, shows Abigail Raymond of Concord Widow & Edward Raymond of Chelmsford Cordwainer selling for £40 to Seth Ross of Concord Innholder about 1 acre in Concord.

The deed does not explain the relationship between the two, but since all of Edward's children (except last) were born in Chelmsford, it sounds like him. And since this is 1752, widow Abigail cannot be the widow of Paul, since Paul did not die until 1759. Instead she appears to be the widow of Daniel Raymond who died in 1745. Their collaboration on this deed suggests Edward is Daniel's son, and Abigail was his widowed mother. This Daniel was Paul's brother. Unfortunately, Daniel's probate is not helpful since he died owing money, and other than a widow Abigail, no heirs are named (a guardian is appointed for son Freeman, aka Freeborn, in a separate file).

The Raymond Genealogy, p. 126, says, "Among them [i.e., referring to Daniel's children of whom "no record has been found"] undoubtedly were Daniel 48, and an Edward, who is claimed to have been the Edward who m. Abigail Patch. My records show that the latter was the son of Paul (22)." We have shown above that the author's records, their substance unfortunately not explained here, must have been wrong.

The Balch Genealogy, p. 345, says, "[Daniel] Raymond removed to Marblehead, Mass., and lived there from 1715 to about 1730. Thence he moved to Beverly, and shortly after to Concord, Mass." And indeed, Marblehead is where we find the baptism of Daniel's son Edward on 25 Aug 1728 (2nd of that name, an earlier son Edward bp. 1721 must have died), which would likewise match an age at death of 70. (The Balch Genealogy does not give Daniel a son Edward (or any of the other children baptized in Marblehead) or have any information on Edward. It preceded the published VRs, and presumably checked only town vital records for births, thereby missing the church records of baptisms, of which we were able to take advantage, since they were documented in the published VRs.)

So the deed appears to show Edward of Chelmsford was the son of Daniel Raymond and Abigail Balch, and it apparently was known (or suspected) by some people, but obscured by the erroneous identification in the Raymond Genealogy.

    EDWARD RAYMOND
    died Dec. 26, 1798,
    aged 7[0?9?] years.

    died Dec. 21, 1814,
    aged 84 years.
[Note: the memorial page says the age given on the gravestone is 79, Royalston VRs [cited above] say the gravestone said 70. The image doesn't seem to be clear enough to distinguish. But regardless of which of the possible set of parents are chosen, the baptism for their respective Edwards both suggest 70 is correct.]
