Notes Contributed by Frank M. Jackson:

Chancery Court record:BMJ-55 death certificate Section 175 #23832

"In a biography of his son, Frederick Way Jackson, in The Boroughs of Brooklyn and Queens Counties of Nassau and Suffolk by Henry Isham Hazelton (V.7. 249-250), Edward Jackson is identified as Frederick's father and Mary Louise Anthony as his mother. It reports that Edward was born in Jerusalem, NY in 1817. It also reports that his mother died in 1886. The report claims that Edward 'was prominent in the community and a leading figure in many interests and endeavors, being active in the hotel business until his death in 1864.'

"The death certificate for Frederick Way Jackson, information for which must have been supplied by Frank Fletcher Jackson, his son, lists Frederick's father as John H. Jackson. Although this is certainly not correct, it may have meaning.

"A certificate issued by New York State over the signature of James M. Onderdonk declares that Edward Jackson of Hempstead in North Hempstead, NY on 4 July 1837 'of his own free will and choice, enrolled himself into a Troop of Horse Artillery under my command, comprising part of the second Regiment of the First Brigade of New York State Horse Artillery.'

"Edward is listed as a child under 21 years of age of John Jackson in a Chancery Court petition of 18 March 1838.

"In a deed dated 17 May 1839 (Queens Co, Liber YY : 249) John Jackson and his wife Margaret, sold to Stephen C. Jackson of Brooklyn, Isaac Jackson of Hempstead, Jacob S. Jackson of Brooklyn, Coe D. Jackson, Parmenus Jackson, Richard Jackson and Edward Jackson all of Brooklyn for eight thousand dollars two parcels of land near Jerusalem, Hempstead.

"Parmenus Jackson and Edward Jackson sell land in Jersualem, NY on 21 June 1839 (Queens, Liber YY:458-459) to Stephen C. Jackson. They sell 'an equal undivided eighth part' of a 100 acre parcel and a 200 acre parcel with appurtenances for $2000. (see fuller note for Stephen C. Jackson.)

"Edward Jackson is listed as a merchant in the 1843-44 Brooklyn City Directory with his house at 40 Douglas. In 1854 he is listed as living on Gates Ave between Grand and Classon Avenues. In 1855-56 Edward Jackson is listed with Alexander Anthony as a 'butcher' at Classon Ave and the corner of Quincy St. with his house the same. He is listed alone in 1856-57 as on the corner of Classon Ave and Quincy. In 1857-58 he is listed as a butcher at Fulton Ave near Washington Ave with his house on Quincy near Classon Ave.

"On 16 Sept 1848 John Jackson deeded property (Kings Co, Liber 184: 310) to, among others, Edward Jackson & Jacob S. Jackson.

"Edward is listed in the 1850 US Census (M432,roll 519:319) as age 33 with wife, Mary age 27, son Jacob age 4, and daughter, Elizabeth, age 2. The entry reports that his real estate is worth $25,000 and that he has no occupation. An Ellen Daly, born in Ireland, and age 19 is in the household.

"On 23 Feb 1850 the heirs of John Jackson deeded property (Kings Co, Liber 211: 311) to Edward Jackson.

"On 3 Dec 1852 Edward Jackson deeded property (Kings Co., 302: 470) to Timothy P. Burger, assignee.

"The 1855 New York State census shows Edward living in the 7th ward of Brooklyn on the 23rd of June of 1855. He is listed as age 27 (probably 37 ?), having been born on Long Island and occupation 'butcher'. His family is identified as Mary L. Jackson, wife, age 32, having been born in NYC, Jacob S. Jackson son age 0, born in Brooklyn; Kate B. Jackson, (illegible) age 6, Frederick W. Jackson, son, age 4, born in Brooklyn; George R. Jackson, son, age 2 born in Brooklyn, Emily Dearborn (?), sister, age ? born in NYC, Catherine Brant, servant, age ?, born in Germany.

"The Brooklyn City Directory for 1858 lists Edward Jackson, butcher, at Fulton Ave near Washington Ave with his house at Quincy near Classon.

"On 25 May 1859 Edward Jackson deeds land (Kings Co, Liber501:488) in a debtor judgment to Herbert T. Moore.

"In the 1859-60 Brooklyn City Directory an Edward Jackson is listed as butcher at Bedford Rd. near Grand Ave.

"The 1860 US Census (T7-11170, p.170) entry for Edward Jackson lists him as 'laborer'and age 40. Also, his wife is Mary Jackson, age 36, and his children : Jacob, age 14, Elizabeth, age 12, Frederick, age 9, George, age 7, Edward, age 3 and Matilda, age 1. They live in the 7th ward of Brooklyn.

"In the Brooklyn Daily Eagle of 4 May 1864 Edward Jackson is listed as delinquent in his taxes ($84.91) for 1862 along with numerous other Jacksons, all property in the 7th ward near the Brooklyn Navy Yard. He owes taxes on 18 lots and 3 houses.

"Edward Jackson's death certificate (NYC Archives # 0533) indicates that he died at Downing Street, Brooklyn, NY, on 25 January 1864 at age 47 of _________pneumonia. Letters of Administration were filed 15 February 1864 for Edward Jackson. Unfortunately virtually all the bound volumes of Letters of Administration before 1900 for Kings County have gone missing.

"Edward was first interred in a 'receiving tomb' on 27 Jan 1864 and was then buried in Greenwood Cemetery, Brooklyn, NY in a plot that includes his wife and her second husband, George Ross on 4 May 1882. His stone bears the dates 1817-1864. However, the interment record at Green-Wood cemetery indicates that Edward was kept in a receiving tomb (#4259) from his death on 25 Jan 1864 until his burial on 4 May 1882. Apparently when he died Mary lacked the funds to bury him.

"A death notice in The Brooklyn Daily Eagle of 26 January 1864 declared that Edward died on 25 January 1864 at age 46 years 7 months and 21 days. Friends were invited to the funeral to be held at his mother in law's house ( Mrs. Anthony) at Hickory Street near Classon Avenue on Wednesday 27 January at 1:00 p.m."
