Will Abstract
- IN THE NAME OF GOD AMEN, I Edmund Hodges of the County of Pittsylvania and Parish of [skip] , being [through] the abundant mercy and goodness of God, well of body and of a sound and perfect understanding and memory for which thanks be to almighty God for it [skip] Viz After all my just debts be paid and funeral charges are complied with I leave to my loving wife Nephany during her natural life or widowhood my whole estate. Item. I give and bequeath to my sons John Hodges, Thomas Hodges, Moses Hodges, David Hodges and Jesse Hodges eight hundred acres of land, to be divided amongst them [skip] In witness whereof I have hereunto set and affixed my hand and seal this 7th day of September 1778.

- CODICIL: Be it known to all men by these presents that I Edmond Hodges of Pittsylvania County have made and declared my last will and testament in writing bearing date the seventh day of September 1778. I the said Edmond Hodges by this present Codicil do ratify and confirm my said last will and testament, except my daughter Susannah Slaydon's equal part of my moveable estate which I do hereby revoke and annul as she has since deceased. I do will and bequeath the same part of an equal part of my moveable estate which was allotted her to be equally divided among her six children viz, James Slayton, Rachel Slayton, Pattsey Slayton, John Slayton, Edmund Slayton and Arthur Porter Slayton, to them and their heirs. :My will and meaning is that this Codicil be adjudged to be a part of my last will and testament. In witness whereof I have hereunto set my hand this 11th day of February 1782.

- At a Court held for Pittsylvania County the 17th day of December 1782, the within last will and testament of Edmund Hodges, deceased, was exhibited into Court by John Hodges and Thomas Hodges two of the Executors therein named and proved by oaths of two of the witnesses and ordered to be recorded also a Codicil annexed to the said will proved and ordered to be recorded and on the motion of the said Executors who made oath according to law certificate is granted them for obtaining a probate thereof in due form of law on giving security. Whereupon they together with Nolon Dickerson, Samuel Em??merson, Abraham Shelton and Epaphroditus White, their securities entered into bond and acknowledged. the same according to law.

- Edmund Hodges of the County of Pittsylvania... lend to my loving wife Nephany during her natural life or widowhood my whole estate........ my five sons John Hodges, Thomas Hodges, Moses Hodges, David Hodges, and JESSE HODGES eight hundred acres of land to be divided amongst them so that my son Thomas have is land where I now dwell and my son David to have his land taking the place where Samuel Morley (Mosley sp?) did settle on and if it please God to take me out of this world before I do clear out the survey that was surveyed for me adjoining the patton (pattern?) land the money to be paid out of my estate for the clearing the land out of the office...) This will lists wife and 5 boys. And later in a codicil we find a daughter Susannah Hodges. This daughter married a John Slayden, there is some question as to exact spelling of his name, but I will use Slayden here.
