About Edmund Dillon Davis
Edmund Dillon Davis was born 4 September 1892, the son of Edmund Davis, Jr. (1850-1929) and his wife Eva Fay "Eve" Eidson (1871-1952). Edmund spent most of his childhood in Butler County, Kansas, growing up in the towns of Milton and Whitewater. [Source: 1900, 1920 & 1930 U.S. Census]. According to the World War I Draft Registration Card that Edmund completed on 5 June 1917 in Whitewater, Butler County, Kansas, Edmund was single, age 24, was of medium height, medium build, had grey eyes and dark brown hair. He was working at the time as a printer for a newspaper, no doubt the newspaper purchased by his father some years earlier. Edmund was a World War I veteran and served his country well.
On 10 December 1922, Edmund married Mary Elizabeth Hamilton (1902-2001), the daughter of Peter Theodore Hamilton (1864-1952) and his wife Ella Louise Garthwaite (1867-1946), in Kansas.
In the 1930 U.S. Census, Edmund was listed as age 38, had income listed in the previous year of $1,500 and was working as an "Editor" (Occupation) of a "City Paper" (Industry). He was listed as "Head of Household" with wife Mary E. Davis (age 28), daughters Elmina O. Davis (age 5), Gloris W. Davis (age 4 years 2 months) and son Lyle E. Davis (age 3 months). According to an account in Butler County’s Eighty Years ~ 1855-1935 by Jessie Perry Stratford, Edmund D. Davis was the Managing Editor of the Whitewater Independent, a local paper in Towanda, Butler County, Kansas, founded by his father.
Edmund Davis also served in the Kansas State House of Representatives from 1937-1938 and represented the citizens of Whitewater in Butler County as a Democrat in Congressional District 2. He passed away on 31 August 1950 in Wichita, Sedgwick County, Kansas at the age of 57. His wife Mary Elizabeth would go on to live another 51 years after Edmund, living to the grand age of 99, just eight months short of what would have been her 100th birthday.

Edmund (Ted) Davis was a pioneer newspaper man in Towanda, buying the Towanda Herald from M. Potts. Mr. Davis published the paper until the tornado of March 31, 1892, which wrecked the town’s business and residence districts and killed eight persons. Mr. Davis then moved the remnant of his plant to Whitewater, and changed the name of the publication to the Whitewater Independent. Since the death of Mr. Davis, the plant is owned by the Davis estate and managed and edited by Edmund D. Davis. Since the removal of the Davis plant, Towanda has had several papers. For years, George W. Moore issued the Towanda Times. J. C. Stoddard now owns the plant and issues The Western Butler County Times.
