Death[4] 1905 Paddington, Middlesex, England

Edith Somers Phippen was born in 1883 at Edenbridge in Kent, daughter of Clara Edith Phippen, formerly Holland, and her husband Robert George Phippen, a groom. When Edith was about five years old her mother died. A year later Edith's father married again, with a Mary Rice becoming Edith's stepmother.

The 1891 census finds Edith living at North Frith in the parish of Hadlow, Kent, with her father, stepmother and their newborn daughter, Edith's half-sister. Sadly the baby died later that year. The following year Edith's father died too, aged only 33. Edith had therefore lost both her parents by the time she was eight years old. She was presumably brought up by her stepmother Mary.

The 1901 census finds Edith working as a domestic servant at 87 Sutherland Avenue in the Paddington area of London. Her stepmother Mary was working as a cook nearby at Hyde Park Street.

Sadly Edith died as a young woman of 21, dying in the Paddington area in 1905. In a curious twist, six years later Edith's stepmother Mary was living at 87 Sutherland Avenue in the 1911 census, but not as a servant - Mary's sister was now running it as a boarding house.
