Clara Edith Holland's origins have yet to be established. Her first confirmed sighting is in 1882 when she married a groom named Robert George Phippen in the Steyning district of Sussex. They then moved to Edenbridge in Kent, where they had a daughter Edith Somers Phippen in 1883.

Sadly Clara died in 1888, aged just 28. She died in the Croydon area. Robert remarried the following year, but died three years later aged 33.
