Life in New England

Was of Cambridge in 1634, a petitioner for Groton in 1656, having before resided in Barnstable, where he died in 1673. He was one of twenty who had lands granted in Concord in 1659, and was employed as a carpenter. He married Margery, sister of Major Simon Willard, and had a daugther Ruth married Stephen Hall, and two sons, Simon and Samuel, who settled in this town [Concord], and were the fruitful vines whose numerous branches extend over this and Worcester counties, and part of New Hampshire, and are constantly sending forth new and flourishing shoots. He married second Johanna (Hull) Bursley, widow of John Bursley. (See Great Migration Begins)

Legacy

[Based on The Great Migration 1634-5, p. 2:294, which cites Plymouth Probate 3:1:72, and Mayflower Descendant 24:71-3.] Will of "Dolar Davis' of Barnstable, dated 13 Sep 1672, inventory 19 Jun 1673, proved 2 Jul 1673, mentions "son[s] Symon and Samuel", "my dear and loving wife Joanna", "my son John" [executor], "son-in-law Lewis ... and to my daughter Mary his wife", "my daughter Ruth Hall". Also mentions "Roger Chandler of Concord ... his son Joseph", the poor of the town, and "respected friends William Butterick, Richard Hassell and Thomas Browne".

Dolor Davis arrived in this country in May 1634, along with his brother-in-law Simon Willard. He settled in Cambridge, then in Duxbury about 1640, then in Barnstable in 1643.
