Pension application of David Moore W1456 Jane Moore f25VA
    Transcribed by Will Graves 6/27/13

    State of Tennessee Bedford County
On this 14th day of April A.D. 1840, personally appeared before the Circuit Court for the
County of Bedford aforesaid at the Court house in Shelbyville Jane Moore aged nearly seventy
years, a resident of the County of Marshall and State of Tennessee, who being first duly sworn according to law doth on her oath make the following declaration in order to obtain the benefit of the provision made by the Act of Congress passed June 7, 1838, entitled "an act granting half pay and pensions to certain widows." That she is the widow of David Moore deceased who was a private in the Revolution, that he enlisted in the regular service in Staunton, Augusta County, Virginia, under a recruiting officer by the name of McIlhaney. He entered in the service for the period of three years. Declarant has no means of telling the time of which he entered the service.
She has heard him say that he was about eighteen years of age when he entered the service; and he was born, as will appear by annexed proof in 1758. She has heard him further say that he was in the battle at Stony Point [July 16, 1779] which she remembers the more particularly, as he stated that they were made to go into battle with unloaded guns, which made him suspect that he together with his comrades had been sold. She has heard him say that he was at the battle of Monmouth [June 28, 1778], besides other battles and reneoutre's [rencounters] which she does not remember. She has heard him often speaking of his officers – She remembers of his
speaking of Sinclair or St. Clair, of Captain Kirk, of Colonel Moffitt, of Lewis. He was a
volunteer for some months after his regular term of service expired under Colonel McCrary –
during which time he marched to North Carolina, & in the battle of Guilford [March 15, 1781].
Captain Long commanded the company in which he served while a volunteer, when in the
regular service he had a constant friend, companion & messmate in one John Campbell, who
enlisted with him at Staunton, went with him in the same company – and they returned together at the end of three years. Declarant remembers well the return of the two, but does not know the date of the return. Declarant has stated the above facts from her recollection, hoping there will be found evidence in the Department in support of her claim. She has used every effort to ascertain the Regiment or the name of the Colonel commanding the Regiment in which her
husband served but has not succeeded. She has no documentary evidence to prove his services.
John Campbell has been dead for many years. She sends here with the testimony of George
Campbell, who was a younger brother of John Campbell.
She further declares that she was married to the said David Moore on the 17th day of
August 1788, that her husband the aforesaid David Moore died on the 2nd day of December 1831.
She has no documentary proof of their said marriage. She was not married to him prior to his
leaving the service, but the marriage took place, previous to the first day of January 1794, viz.: at the time above stated.
