HOBBIES: Sketching and painting filled much of his spare time, though he had no training in artistic skills.

RESIDENCES: 1815 - At birth - Skipton, Yorkshire, England. 1818 - After migration - Settled in Brownsville, Pennsylvania, United States of America. 1839 - He came to Ohio and resided in Belmont County. 1840 - He located on a farm in Harrison County. (He lived in a large white frame house which was located near the top of a rather high ridge about a mile or more north of the town of Harrisville. The location of this town was rather unusual in that it was half in Jefferson Co., three-eighths in Harrison Co. and one eighth in Belbont Co. [J. MIGRATION: Went to USA with parents in 1818.

HEALTH: Suffered from severe stomach troubles - probably a cancer.

CONFLICT: Apparent conflict in records of birth are probably the result of the peculiar geographical positioning of Harrisville (see note in Residences above).

MISCELLANEOUS_NOTES: Was black-haired and of a handsome appearance. A pictureof him is in existence [J. Howard Binns]. His physical build was not such as suited him to the heavy work of farming. Was quite intellectual and largely self-taught. He studied short-hand and kept a diary with all the entries written in Graham shorthand. He was of an artistic bent and liked to sketch, some of his pictures being very good. Birth and death years added to original by unknown hand.
