  2.   Daniel Throckmorton by Elda LaVerne Pierce Throckmorton.

Dan was a wise, willing and hard working man. He had lots of friends. In my memory I see him curling his black mustache with his fingers. His black unruly mop of hair usually covered part of his blue, blue eyes. Throckmorton’s had very blue eyes. I’ve seen him take out his pocketknife and cut off a part of his hair that was in the way.
He had a jolly disposition. He played the fiddle, a grinnin and tapping his toe, with the sweat pouring off his face. He would play way into the night and not a note of written music anywhere.
My Papa knew Dan Throckmorton and respected him. He was a wise, willing hard worker with many talents. I am told he had an invention for improving the horsedrawn mowing machine, and other farm equipment.
He loved animals. He liked to tease them. His motto was “feed, water and bed down the stock, then take care of your own needs.” Throckmortons had some fruit trees and called it the orchard in Blue Valley.”
Elda remembers being five years old with her papa in Throckmorton’s yard. There was a team hitched to a wagon by the corral in Giles, Utah. This day Dan grabbed the horse’s ear. He pulled it down enough to bite it. As Dan and her papa still talked the horse reached around and nipped Daniel on the seat. Elda thought that it was so funny. She squealed, but one look from her Papa shut her off.
Elda said, “I was a little afraid of him, but I liked him. I liked the house parties with dancing and games. Dan made a special wagon. I liked this wagon. The wagon had wooden wheels. He harnessed his sheep dog to the wagon to pull us. This dog was special. It was so good to the kids. One day when we were at the Throckmorton’s we were playing with the dog and wagon. Dan harnessed the dog to the wagon so we could have a ride. We were pulling and hugging the dog. In our play the dog turned and bit Vern, Elda’s older brother. We all started to howl and ran and told Daniel the dog had bitten, Vern. Without hesitation he got his rifle and headed for the wagon and the dog. We knew what he was going to do and we pleaded with him not to shoot the dog. He paid no attention to us. He unharnessed the dog. He took the dog into the orchard and beyond toward the blue hill. We soon heard a shot and knew he had killed his dog.
He freighted grain and farm produce, up the valley, all the way up to Loa. He exchanged it for flour, sugar and other household needs.
    Throckmorton’s never owned a car.
Daniel was a student of the scriptures. He especially loved the Bible. Father Throckmorton preached in church gatherings, and spoke at funerals. Mother Throckmorton told me of a time she was getting more and more nervous at a funeral where Dan was speaking. At this funeral he had forgotten his clean handkerchief. As the sweat poured from his forehead, his hand went to his pocket. Tillie said, “I slid closer to the edge of the seat, ready to say Dan is that my dishrag?”
In the spring of 1924 Daniel moved to Genola. The first thing he did was dig a storm cellar. He was used to tornadoes in Arkansas and Ohio. They moved their house from a mining town. Their reclinging years were spent in Genola, Utah 1924- 1930 where Dan died.
Daniel had a stroke on 27 Jan 1928. He had a series of strokes. He lived two years after his first stroke. He was left an invalid. Bishop E.R. Nelson of Genola, Utah and Dan were close friends. They discussed scripture regularly. Not long before Dan died Bishop Nelson came to visit to see how Dan was feeling. Dan was very ill having chills and fever. In his conversation Bishop Nelson remarked that he was a little child. Daniel remarked, “You’re a little child, huh? How do you expect me to keep warm, and you wearing the overcoat?” His friend and our, bishop Ray Nelson, visited us and talked of Dan often. He called him “my walkin’ Bible”. He said in his religious discussions at home, if a principle wasn’t clear or settled, someone would come up with, “I’ll ask Dan”. Ray Nelson said, “ Daniel was honest and fair. He got things done.”
Father Throckmorton died in Genola, January 1930, two years before Ammon and I were married.
Daniel Throckmorton is buried in the Santaquin, Ut. Cemetery.
Mother Throckmorton moved to Payson, Utah about 1937. She lived there until she passed away in 1955. The family moved her home from Genola to Payson, Utah. The house was placed next to Len and Dora Pierce's home. Dora is her daughter and Len in my brother Len. Yep, brothers and sisters married each other. Dora and Ammon Dee are brothers and sisters and Len and I (Elda) are brothers and sisters. Our children always say they are "double cousins".
