Conrad Stellwagen was born in Germany (Darmstadt). He spoke high German and could read, write, speak English.

The family started in Menomonee Falls, WI and then moved to Graneville, WI and spent several years there. The family came to Lewiston, Winona, Minnesota where they settled on a farm about a mile west of the village, now known as the Harry Brown farm. The family lived there for 6 years, then spent 2 years in Lewiston, and then moved to Silo.

The Stellwagens bought their land in Lewiston from August and Anna Fritz for $3,250 on October 23, 1874. On January 23, 1904 Conrad sold the land to William and Edith Stellwagen for $6,000. Supposedly this was at the "old home place" at the end of the road in the Silo area, about 3 miles from Lewiston.(Source: Lenore Stellwagen Buth who lives in OR.)
