Christopher Columbus came to Illinois sometime before 1880 as he is mentioned in 1880 census as living in Libertyville. LAKE COUNTY was organized 1 March 1839. It's parent county is McHenry. It is in the extreme North East corner of the state. It is 490 square mile. Pioneer settlers began to come in 1839 and located chiefly along the DesPlaines River. Indians vacated area the next year. It derived its name from the 14 small lakes that are found within its limits. The surface is undulating and equally divided between sand, prairie and second growth timber. LIBERTYVILLE was first known as Vardins Grove later as Independence Grove (July 4 1836) it is then known as Burlington and became the county seat finally changed name to Libertyville In 1841 the county seat moved to Little Fort, now Waukegan Libertyville is at terminus of a spur of Chicago, Milwaukee and St. Paul RR, 36 miles N-NW of Chicago. The region is agricultural. 1880 the population was 695 1890 - 550 1990 - 864 1850 census lists Augustus W Bulkley in Fulton County p. 169, Canton Wallace Buckley, Lake County p. 042, Libertyville 1840 pop of Lake County - 2634 The Gold Rush of 1849 tempted large numbers of Lake County citizens 1850 pop of Lake County - 14, 226 October, 1850 the Waukegan Weekly Gazette was started
