The first member of the Vest family to live in what is now WV was Charles Vest, who came to what is now Summers County from Franklin County, Virginia, and settled near the Raleigh County line. He died there in 1837. He and his two sons, Anderson and Mosby, are buried in an old cemetery near the old home place.

Jehu Vest, a son of Mosby, settled at Little Pipestem Creek, and operated a mill and blacksmith shop. He had a large family. One of his sons was Charles, who remained in Pipestem after his father's death and continued to operate the mill and smithy, but at his own home. Another son, Joseph, moved to Huntington, where he worked for the Chesapeake and Ohio Railroad for a time, but later he became a salesman, as did his brother, Edward. They sold shoes and dry goods throughout WV and adjacent states, and later Edward became a wholesale merchant in Huntington.

More recently, Monty Vest and his Roadrunners became a popular musical group in WEST Virginia. Descendants of Charles Vest are to be found in many walks of life in this and other states.
