The settlers petitioned the Post Office Department for an office and the request was granted with Charles T. Trego being appointed postmaster February 29, 1848. Trego named the office 'Orion', after the constellation." The closest Post Office at La Grange had closed in 1845. He is listed in the 1850 Fed. Census as Postmaster, age 50.
