Charles Clay Spilman signed a card for the first registration of the WW I draft. Charles (occ. chemist, for St. Joseph Ry. L. F. & P. Co.) did not have any prior military service, and he claimed an exemption for support of his wife. The registrar's report describes him as medium height, medium build, dark blue eyes, black hair, and with a disability specified as “sound”. The registrar's affidavit includes an additional note, “Have Registered with U.S. Bureau of Mines as a member of American Chemical Society.”
