Charles John Merrick was baptised on 16th January 1831, at Stanwell in Middlesex, son of a yeoman farmer called William Merrick and his wife Susanna. The family lived at Stanwell Moor, and Charles appears in the 1841 census living there with his parents and siblings.
By 1851, Charles was living in London with his grandmother and working as a furrier. He later joined the police.
On 21st May 1855, aged 24, Charles married Ann Neal or Neil. They had two sons together in 1855 and 1858, although the younger son died as a baby. Ann then died in 1859, aged 23.
The 1861 census finds Charles living with several other policemen in a house near Regents Park which appears to have also been used for holding prisoners. His surviving son was living back in Stanwell with Charles's father and brother.
Charles died in 1868, aged 37.
