Ann Neal was baptised on 15th November 1835 at Houghton Conquest in Bedfordshire, daughter of Sarah Neal formerly Gobby and her husband William Neal. When Ann was less than two years old, her father was convicted of sheep stealing and transported to Australia, never to return to England. The 1841 census finds Ann living with her brother Thomas and mother in Toddington, sharing a house with her mother's sister Esther.
By 1851, Ann was living with her mother's sister Mary at St Pancras in the northern suburbs of London.
On 21st May 1855, aged 19, Ann married a policeman called Charles John Merrick. They had two sons together in 1855 and 1858, although the younger son died as a baby.
Ann died in 1859, aged 23. Charles survived her by nine years.
