Charles Hodges was born about 1828 at Drayton in Somerset, and probably at Burton Pynsent, a hamlet which at that time straddled the parishes of Drayton and Curry Rivel. Charles was baptised on 30th May 1830 at Curry Rivel alongside his younger sister Mary. Charles was the son of Sarah Hodges, formerly Forsey, and her husband William Hodges, a shepherd. Charles' father died in 1834, when Charles was about six years old.

Charles appears in both the 1841 and 1851 censuses living with his mother and siblings at Burton Pynsent. In 1851 he was working as an agricultural labourer. He has yet to be researched after 1851.
