The family is being served by the Gorsline-Runciman Co., Ball-Dunn Chapel, Mason This Information was sent from Patricia Gee - 2003 Charles G. Groh was born to Elroy and Cora Groh on November 24, 1917. He had sparkling eyes aand lots of dark curly hair. As a youth in the 1920's his first job was at Dancer's department store in Stockbridge. Every morning on his way to school he would start the fire to heat the store for the other employees. And after school, on his way home, he would bed the fire for the evening. Charles also worked for a local farmer in the onion fields for a hefty sum of .10 cents per day. Soon he became the field foreman and advanced his pay to .25 cents per day. Charles wanted to buy a car and took another job at the bakery in Stockbridge. He saved his money and purchased a 1934 Ford coupe. Charles was a pleasant, trustworthy and good looking young man. Charles was also stubborn. He wanted to play sports in high school, but his mother refused to let him because of his asthma, so he quit school in the eleventh grade and started working full time at the bakery. Charles spent time a lot of time at his older brother's home in Lansing. Bill and his wife Virginis rented a home in Lansing and one weekend in 1937 while Charles was visiting, the house nest door to Bill and Virginia had hired a young lady to care for their children. Charles wasted no time in introducing himself to Bernadine Farr, the babysitter next door. A romance soon began and two years later on June 19, 1939, they were married. Charles and Bernadine moved to Holt in 1940. Charles had a great time with Bernadine's brother Gale cruising around the countryside in their cars. Bernadine;s father was instrumental in securing Charles a position at the Atlas Drop Forge. He worked there until the war ended in 1945. Together they had three children. Judy was born Dec. 2, 1940. She was the apple of dad's eye, a spirited strawberry blonde. Her grandma would say she was a "chip of the old block". Michael was born in October 1943, he was an outgoing, intelligent child. Born with the ability to disassemble anything at any time. When the war ended Charles went to work for Rosevale Packing Company as a salesman. The Groh family always had lots of meat and Charles' favorite, ring bologna. David was born in March of 1962, a quite wide-eyed child with a love for choclate, just like his mom. About this time Charles was hired by Delhi Township as a Building Inspector. He enjoyed his employment with the township and etired in 1978. Charles liked to spend his leisure time fishing, flying model planes with David, mowing grass and doing woodworking. Most everyone who knew Charles has seen his work or owns a picture frame, stool, bench or toy made in "Charlies Barn" on Coolridge street. Charles liked to travel. Bernadine and he made several trips to New England states, especially Massachusetts and Washington D.C. He enjoyed his grand children, nieces, nephews and ring bologna. We miss him, but will remember that he always was willing to help someone in need even if it meant giving up the last dime in his pocket. |
